Durante la campa\u00f1a de pruebas, que se desarrollar\u00e1 hasta la primavera de 2020, el equipo de Airbus comprobar\u00e1 que el sat\u00e9lite es capaz de soportar las duras condiciones del despegue y del entorno espacial.<\/p>\n<p>Sentinel-6 de Copernicus es una misi\u00f3n operacional de altimetr\u00eda de los oc\u00e9anos que proporcionar\u00e1 mediciones continuas de la topograf\u00eda marina durante la pr\u00f3xima d\u00e9cada. Sentinel-6 incorpora un alt\u00edmetro radar que suministrar\u00e1 puntualmente observaciones muy precisas de la altura de la superficie de los mares. Esta informaci\u00f3n es esencial para llevar a\u00a0cabo una monitorizaci\u00f3n continua de los cambios del nivel del mar, un indicador clave del cambio clim\u00e1tico que tambi\u00e9n es esencial en el campo de la oceanograf\u00eda operacional. Sentinel-6 cartografiar\u00e1 hasta el 95 por ciento de los oc\u00e9anos libres de hielo en el planeta cada diez d\u00edas y proporcionar\u00e1 informaci\u00f3n vital para la seguridad mar\u00edtima acerca de las corrientes oce\u00e1nicas, la velocidad del viento y la altura de las olas.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Los resultados permitir\u00e1n a los gobiernos y a las instituciones establecer programas eficaces de protecci\u00f3n para las regiones costeras. Los datos tendr\u00e1n un valor incalculable no solo para los organismos de ayuda en caso de cat\u00e1strofes, sino tambi\u00e9n para las autoridades en materia de planificaci\u00f3n urbana, seguridad de los edificios o puesta en servicio de diques.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>El nivel global del mar aumenta una media de 3,3 mil\u00edmetros al a\u00f1o debido al calentamiento global, lo que podr\u00eda acarrear graves consecuencias para los pa\u00edses que cuentan con zonas costeras densamente pobladas.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Se han desarrollado dos sat\u00e9lites Sentinel-6 para el Programa Europeo Copernicus destinados al medioambiente y a la seguridad bajo la direcci\u00f3n industrial de Airbus. Aunque Sentinel-6 forma parte de la familia de misiones Copernicus de la Uni\u00f3n Europea, para su ejecuci\u00f3n cuenta tambi\u00e9n con la cooperaci\u00f3n internacional de la ESA, la NASA, la NOAA y Eumetsat.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Cada sat\u00e9lite tiene un peso aproximado de 1,5 toneladas. Sentinel-6A ser\u00e1, a partir de noviembre de 2020, el primero de los dos sat\u00e9lites Sentinel-6 que continuar\u00e1 recopilando mediciones por sat\u00e9lite de la superficie de los oc\u00e9anos, una tarea que comenz\u00f3 en 1992. Est\u00e1 previsto que Sentinel-6B le siga a partir de 2025.
