adjudicado a Airbus el contrato de las naves espaciales gemelas GRACE-C. Esta nueva misi\u00f3n de la NASA y la Agencia Espacial Alemana en el Centro Aeroespacial Alem\u00e1n (DLR) reforzar\u00e1 la colaboraci\u00f3n de m\u00e1s de 20 a\u00f1os entre los Estados Unidos y Alemania para garantizar la medici\u00f3n ininterrumpida del campo gravitatorio de la Tierra, que comenz\u00f3 en 2002 con GRACE y contin\u00faa con GRACE Follow-On, lanzado en 2018.<\/p>\n<p>Durante sus cinco a\u00f1os de vida nominal, la misi\u00f3n GRACE-C (Gravity Recovery And Climate Experiment-Continuity) continuar\u00e1 la serie de mediciones que observan c\u00f3mo se desplazan, mes a mes, las aguas subterr\u00e1neas, los oc\u00e9anos, los desplazamientos del terreno y las capas de hielo de la Tierra, midiendo los cambios en el campo gravitatorio del planeta.<\/p>\n<p>Alain Faur\u00e9, responsable de Sistemas Espaciales de Airbus, declar\u00f3: <em>\u201cEs asombroso pensar que, sin mirar a la Tierra, dos sat\u00e9lites a m\u00e1s de 200 km de distancia entre s\u00ed, puedan decirnos a qu\u00e9 velocidad se est\u00e1n derritiendo nuestras capas de hielo. En la vigilancia del medio ambiente, la continuidad es clave. Los valiosos datos proporcionados por las anteriores misiones GRACE son testimonio de su \u00e9xito y es una gran noticia que Airbus siga formando parte de esta misi\u00f3n internacional que proporciona las herramientas para medir c\u00f3mo est\u00e1 evolucionando nuestro clima\u201d<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>GRACE-C consta de dos sat\u00e9lites id\u00e9nticos que vuelan a unos 200 km de distancia entre s\u00ed, a una altitud orbital de 500 km y con una inclinaci\u00f3n de 89 grados. Cada sat\u00e9lite tendr\u00e1 un tama\u00f1o de aproximadamente 3 x 2 x 1 metros y pesar\u00e1 unos 600 kg. Su puesta en \u00f3rbita desde Estados Unidos est\u00e1 prevista a partir de finales de 2028.<\/p>\n<p>Al igual que sus predecesoras, la misi\u00f3n GRACE-C est\u00e1 dise\u00f1ada para medir con precisi\u00f3n los peque\u00f1os cambios de distancia entre los sat\u00e9lites debidos a las variaciones de la gravedad, con una precisi\u00f3n sin precedentes de hasta la micra. A medida que la pareja de sat\u00e9lites gira alrededor de la Tierra, las zonas de gravedad ligeramente m\u00e1s intensa (mayor concentraci\u00f3n de masa) afectar\u00e1n a la posici\u00f3n de la nave y, por tanto, a la distancia entre ellos. El extremadamente preciso sistema de medici\u00f3n por microondas detectar\u00e1 estos cambios y permitir\u00e1 cartografiar el campo gravitatorio de la Tierra con una precisi\u00f3n inigualable.<\/p>\n<p>A lo largo de los meses y a\u00f1os, la comparaci\u00f3n de estos mapas de gravedad -o la evoluci\u00f3n de la concentraci\u00f3n de masa- permitir\u00e1 a los cient\u00edficos evaluar el balance h\u00eddrico mundial, incluidas las capas fre\u00e1ticas y las capas de hielo, y la influencia del cambio clim\u00e1tico.
