El telescopio espacial Webb (WST) ha llegado al puerto espacial europeo de Kourou, en la Guayana Francesa. La nave se preparar\u00e1 ahora para su lanzamiento, previsto para el 18 de diciembre en un lanzador Ariane 5. Uno de los cuatro instrumentos de su equipaje cient\u00edfico es el espectr\u00f3grafo de infrarrojos cercanos (NIRSpec) construido por Airbus en Alemania.<\/p>\n<p>Antes del lanzamiento, se llevar\u00e1 a cabo una campa\u00f1a completa de pruebas funcionales en octubre para asegurarse de que cada parte de la nave espacial sigue funcionando como se esperaba tras su viaje a Kourou. Airbus apoyar\u00e1 activamente las pruebas funcionales el\u00e9ctricas finales de los cuatro instrumentos cient\u00edficos (incluido NIRSpec) que durar\u00e1n aproximadamente seis d\u00edas.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cEl telescopio Webb cambiar\u00e1 la forma en que vemos el Universo\u201d<\/em>, dijo Jean Marc Nasr, Director de Airbus Space Systems. <em>\u201cNuestras contribuciones a los instrumentos NIRSpec y MIRI son un testimonio de la experiencia de Airbus y del valor que podemos aportar a la astronom\u00eda moderna. Estamos orgullosos de haber desempe\u00f1ado un papel clave en los futuros descubrimientos de la misi\u00f3n Webb\u201d<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Una vez en \u00f3rbita, Webb iniciar\u00e1 un viaje de un mes de duraci\u00f3n, recorriendo cuatro veces la distancia a la Luna, hasta llegar a su destino final, el punto de Lagrange L2, a unos 1,5 millones de kil\u00f3metros detr\u00e1s de la Tierra visto desde el Sol.<\/p>\n<p>Airbus apoyar\u00e1 a NIRSpec desde el lanzamiento hasta la entrada en servicio del sat\u00e9lite (segundo trimestre de 2022), supervisando sus par\u00e1metros las 24 horas del d\u00eda. Esto incluye el periodo durante la fase cr\u00edtica de enfriamiento y luego las pruebas funcionales iniciales cuando se encienda el instrumento NIRSpec. Por \u00faltimo, el equipo de ingenier\u00eda de Airbus tambi\u00e9n seguir\u00e1 prestando apoyo durante la comprobaci\u00f3n del rendimiento y la calibraci\u00f3n hasta el final de la puesta en servicio.<\/p>\n<p>El instrumento NIRSpec, que pesa 200 kg, es un espectr\u00f3grafo multiobjeto capaz de medir simult\u00e1neamente el espectro del infrarrojo cercano de al menos 100 objetos, como estrellas o galaxias, con varias resoluciones espectrales de hasta 0,3 nan\u00f3metros. Las observaciones se realizan en el rango de longitudes de onda de 0,6 a 5,0 micr\u00f3metros. Una vez en funcionamiento, NIRSpec, conocido como el &#8220;s\u00faper ojo&#8221;, operar\u00e1 a una temperatura de -230\u00b0C. Un equipo de m\u00e1s de 70 personas de las sedes de Airbus en Ottobrunn, Friedrichshafen y Toulouse ha trabajado en el dise\u00f1o, el desarrollo y, finalmente, la integraci\u00f3n y las pruebas de NIRSpec, con el apoyo de 17 subcontratistas europeos y de la NASA. El instrumento fue desarrollado por Airbus para la Agencia Espacial Europea (ESA).<\/p>\n<p>Debido a su excelente sensibilidad, su alta resoluci\u00f3n y su amplia cobertura de longitudes de onda, NIRSpec es un instrumento clave para lograr una visi\u00f3n m\u00e1s profunda de la evoluci\u00f3n del universo. Utiliza un concepto altamente at\u00e9rmico con todos los espejos, los soportes de los espejos y la placa base del banco \u00f3ptico, todos ellos fabricados con cer\u00e1mica de carburo de silicio SiC 100\u00ae.<\/p>\n<p>Otro instrumento, llamado Mid-InfraRed Instrument (MIRI), tambi\u00e9n forma parte de la contribuci\u00f3n europea a la misi\u00f3n Webb. Airbus, en el Reino Unido, se encarg\u00f3 de la gesti\u00f3n, la ingenier\u00eda y la calidad para el consorcio europeo que construy\u00f3 el MIRI garantizando un enfoque coherente en el proceso de dise\u00f1o, construcci\u00f3n y pruebas. Cubre el rango de longitudes de onda del infrarrojo medio, desde 5 a 28,3 micras. MIRI ser\u00e1 capaz de penetrar las gruesas capas de polvo que oscurecen las regiones de intenso nacimiento de estrellas. Observar\u00e1 las primeras generaciones de galaxias que se formaron despu\u00e9s del Big Bang y estudiar\u00e1 los lugares de formaci\u00f3n de nuevos planetas y la composici\u00f3n del medio interestelar. Para asegurarse de que la se\u00f1al de los objetos d\u00e9biles no se vea ahogada por el propio brillo infrarrojo del instrumento, MIRI se enfriar\u00e1 a -266 \u00b0C, s\u00f3lo 7 \u00b0C por encima del cero absoluto.<\/p>\n<p>Con el instrumento NIRSpec, Webb estudiar\u00e1 la formaci\u00f3n de las primeras estrellas y galaxias de nuestro Universo, cuando \u00e9ste ten\u00eda s\u00f3lo unos cientos de millones de a\u00f1os. NIRSpec podr\u00e1 captar los espectros de entre 60 y 200 galaxias a la vez, lo que permitir\u00e1 a los cient\u00edficos observar con exquisito detalle c\u00f3mo se formaron y evolucionaron. Mucho m\u00e1s cerca de nosotros, NIRSpec tambi\u00e9n podr\u00e1 estudiar la atm\u00f3sfera de los exoplanetas, estos planetas que orbitan alrededor de estrellas distintas de nuestro Sol. En particular, buscar\u00e1 la firma de mol\u00e9culas clave como el agua.<\/p>\n<p>Webb, la misi\u00f3n que sucede al Telescopio Espacial Hubble (HST), con su conjunto de instrumentos cient\u00edficos permitir\u00e1 mirar m\u00e1s atr\u00e1s en el tiempo en comparaci\u00f3n con el HST, principalmente debido a su mayor sensibilidad y a una banda de longitud de onda m\u00e1s amplia, que va de 0,6 a 27 micr\u00f3metros.
