pr\u00f3ximo vuelo de suministro a la Estaci\u00f3n Espacial Internacional (ISS), el Centro Espacial de la Universidad de Z\u00farich (UZH) y Airbus Defence and Space llevar\u00e1n un experimento al espacio, que est\u00e1 previsto para seguir avanzando en la producci\u00f3n industrial de tejido humano en condiciones de gravedad cero. Con este paso, el espacio podr\u00eda convertirse en un taller para producir tejido humano en miniatura para uso terrestre en investigaci\u00f3n y medicina. Las pruebas preparatorias iniciales en la ISS de hace 18 meses fueron un \u00e9xito.<\/p>\n<p>El proceso para el proyecto conjunto \u201cOrganoides 3D en el espacio\u201d proviene de los cient\u00edficos de Z\u00farich Oliver Ullrich y Cora Thiel, pioneros en la investigaci\u00f3n sobre c\u00f3mo la gravedad influye en las c\u00e9lulas humanas. Junto con Airbus, han desarrollado el proceso para proyectar la madurez. El equipo de Airbus Innovations dirigido por el director del proyecto Julian Raatschen est\u00e1 desarrollando el hardware y proporcionando acceso a la ISS. Desde la idea hasta la primera prueba de producci\u00f3n en el espacio, los socios del proyecto solo tardaron tres a\u00f1os en completar varias fases de prueba y procedimientos de selecci\u00f3n interna altamente competitivos. <em>\u201cSomos los primeros en demostrar que el camino hacia la producci\u00f3n en el espacio es factible, no en teor\u00eda, sino en la pr\u00e1ctica\u201d<\/em>, dice Oliver Ullrich.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>Mejorar el desarrollo de f\u00e1rmacos y reducir la experimentaci\u00f3n con animales<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>Oliver Ullrich, profesor de anatom\u00eda en UZH, la bi\u00f3loga Cora Thiel y Airbus est\u00e1n utilizando la microgravedad en el espacio para desarrollar tejidos tridimensionales similares a \u00f3rganos, los llamados organoides, a partir de c\u00e9lulas madre humanas adultas. <em>\u201cEn la Tierra, los organoides tridimensionales no se pueden producir sin esqueletos de soporte debido a la gravedad\u201d<\/em>, explica Thiel. Estos organoides 3D son de gran inter\u00e9s para las empresas farmac\u00e9uticas: por tanto, los estudios toxicol\u00f3gicos podr\u00edan llevarse a cabo directamente en tejido humano sin la necesidad de modelos animales. Los organoides cultivados a partir de c\u00e9lulas madre de pacientes tambi\u00e9n podr\u00edan usarse en el futuro como componentes b\u00e1sicos para la terapia de reemplazo de tejidos para \u00f3rganos da\u00f1ados. Esto se debe a que el n\u00famero de \u00f3rganos donados dista mucho de ser suficiente para satisfacer la demanda mundial de miles de \u00f3rganos de donantes.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>Organoides 3D cultivados en el espacio<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>La investigaci\u00f3n realizada en marzo de 2020, cuando 250 tubos de ensayo que conten\u00edan c\u00e9lulas madre humanas pasaron un mes en la EEI, tuvo mucho \u00e9xito: se hab\u00edan desarrollado estructuras diferenciadas de h\u00edgado, hueso y cart\u00edlago, como se esperaba, a partir de las c\u00e9lulas madre tisulares en microgravedad a una altitud de 400 kil\u00f3metros. Por el contrario, los cultivos creados en la Tierra, que se cultivaron como controles en condiciones normales de gravedad, mostraron una diferenciaci\u00f3n celular m\u00ednima o nula.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>Robustez y viabilidad<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>En la misi\u00f3n actual, se est\u00e1n enviando al espacio c\u00e9lulas madre de tejido de dos mujeres y dos hombres de diferentes edades.
